evaluation: 1st month of summer

today:
-baked some banana cookies, but they turned out too soft and bland
-watch the proposal. a good romantic comedy with not too much hollywood flavor
-further convinced by the theory of six degrees of separation. decided that i should write an article about this topic for waras kita blog
-admired apostle paul even more. a melancholic at heart, but he spoke as though he lived in our generation! cool paul!

yesterday:
-applied to several companies. started to put less emphasis on craig's list coz there are too many scam postings. no phone calls though :(
-bought the ingredients for banana cookies

2 days ago:
-found out that our paper will be published in june 2009 edition of internationl journal of mobile marketing
-accident. i wasn't proud of it

ok, i shan't go further than that. take away?

FOCUS! remember, summer goals:

1. get a job
2. be fit
3. learn spanish

and none is even in working progress. argh!

plan of attack for summer 2009

summer has officially started and just like any other summers, mel has lots of plans!

1. attend wheel of fortune and jeopardy screenings in the sony studio about 5 miles from my house. i've been wanting to go for these shows for a while. going to make this come true soon!

2. read all the books i've bought over the course of 2 years. sadly, i've barely read past page 20 for all these books. need to re-read everything, so that i would understand the introduction of each book.

3. attend gym classes, pilates, block, whatever. need to get in shape badly. i realized that i have double chins when i look down. must look gorgeous for the big wedding this december.

of course, job search shall be my main priority. now that i've exhausted myself in doing all the unproductive activities, i've regained my will to start working on these projects. woo hoo!

the romanian wedding was a beautiful one. the bride really put a lot of effort in making her dream wedding come true. her signature colors (blue and red) matched for everything: the invitation, the program booklet, the flower arrangement, our dresses, and even our shoes! i was paired up with a cute 17 year old american romanian, whom i had a little hard time trying to find a good conversation topic to talk about. but other than that, this wedding was quite significant to me. it showed me the endless love of parents who couldn't make it to the wedding because their visa applications were rejected. it showed me how much love a guy could pour to his bride and what promises he would hold to her forever. i would look up to utzu and anka for an example of a godly married couple.

in the meantime, here's the pic of chris and i. cute eh?

following the old memory of mine, here comes another vain picture of mine smelling loyola marymount university's roses for the last time. :)

blackberry

the popularity of blackberry is getting so insane that the idea of having one starts to compel me. i began to wonder whether it would bring more value to my communication plan in comparison to my current cdma phone (yes, i still have that same flip phone that has terrible battery life). i did try using my roommie's blackberry feature of google map. the small screen made it barely possible for me to multi-task between driving and using the phone as my navigation. i am sure i don't need this high-tech phone. i have a navigation system in bb. granted, it provides me with erroneous directions at times, but it still works great. i don't need a phone to read my emails. i check my emails numerous times everyday and would rather not look at it during my vacation time. holiday is the only time i stray away from my "addiction" to emails.

anyway, it's 1 more week to graduation! really looking forward to reuniting with mom, pop, and lil bro on may 9th. any thoughts about graduation, you may ask. well, the first one was special coz i got all excited. too excited that i probably swore it's one of my long-anticipated life achievements. now that i am walking for my 2nd commencement, i just want to thank god and my family for building such a strong foundation to my world view.

next step? get a job! i am eyeing one now. i don't want to hold my hopes high, but i am positive i will get something within this month.

pray for me, pals! and congratulate me on may 10th! :P

funeral ad

i normally wouldn't post a video on my blog. however, this one really touches me deeply.

"...in the end, are these small things that you remember. the little imperfections that make them perfect for you. so, to my beautiful children, i hope one day you too will find life partners who are as beautifully imperfect as your father was to me."

moved out...again!

hectic weekend. transferred all my stuff into 2 big suitcases and 10 boxes, cleaned up the apartment, and off we went to the new house. i'm starting to love the new place, but it still needs a lot of work. haven't completely unpacked yet since my boxes are buried among roommies' things. dang it, i need sheer motivation! i need to edit my cover letter, actively search for a new job, do the final touch up on my consulting project, and work on the things for keongmas. yet, i still procrastinate as though there are 30 hours per day. sigh.

anyway, my blog entries have dwindled to one per month. i've been 'busy' catching up with the dvds that i borrow from public library as well as popular online tv shows. now that i live 8 miles further from school, i guess i can't make frequent trips home in between work and class anymore. i sincerely hope that i will utilize the 6 hours between work and class to catch up with my work.

i just discovered wonderful cookies after looking for a famous cookie shop in los angeles! a friend in australia was craving for chunky chocolate chip cookies and i agreed to send her some. decided to buy some for myself after whining over the $3.75/cookie price tag. tried the peanut butter cookie and wow! beautiful blend of saltiness and sweetness added with the soft texture! i shall order a dozen for friends or family who come here for special visits.

heading off to national parks in arizona and utah this weekend. this is the first time i am going to bunk out of classes for a week. oops.

the other boleyn girl

just watched this movie about 2 sisters who sought for king henry viii's affection. the movie led me to the conclusion that the root of promiscuousity was the unimaginably stupid behavior of these royale families. a powerful king chose to leave his wife, the queen of england, because he was curious over this girl who refused to lie down with him. in the end, the girl couldn't bear him an heir and chose to sleep with her own brother, in hope of getting the king a son! of course the king was angered and beheaded her and her brother.

what a tragic. generations after generations later, when human beings are becoming more uncivilized, not only are the royales doing these promiscuous deeds, but also anybody who has humanly desires. a religion's commandment is interpreted wrongly and people use it as an excuse to get married 4 times. some new terms such as 'in an open relationship' or 'domestic partnership' emerge. where's the love?

i can see how our generation is degrading over time. here's the chronology of how i imagined the deterioration of generations is like:

in the 20s, during my great-grandma's times: you can't talk to boys. there's no such thing as true love. your feet need to be bound to be tiny so as to attract any rich men who may be interested in you. (oh ya, the guy has to come from the same province in china as you are) you don't have to learn how to write and read. you just need to know how to sew and cook.

in the 50s, during my grandma's times: no more bound feet. there's some interaction with boys, but your parents ultimately give the decision whom you should be marrying to. yes, you need to learn basic reading and writing. homemaking is still important. you don't want your husband to be dissatisfied with home and leave you for a mistress.

in the 70s, during my mom's times: it's okay to hang out with boys as long as you're with a group of girls. dating can start when you're 18. as long as your future husband's a chinese, there's no concern in his ancestry roots (so long his family background is clean). the path to gender equality is being paved. women still prefer cooking to pursuing education, but they finally realize they do have the power to be as successful as men.

in the 2000s, during our times: technology is giving us accessibility to the world. teen pregnancy becomes rampant due to peer pressure. it's a must to have college education, otherwise you'll be ousted from the good-paying jobs. the free sex practice that many people adopt cause them to turn off the idea of marriage. besides, they have done what married people have done. why bother getting married while many things can be pursued as a single?

in the 2030s, during my kids' times: am i supposed to be relieved that my daughter is not pregnant while getting out of college? will i be overjoyed to find out that her future spouse is chinese? in fact, will any of my kids get married at all?

kinda stressful eh? but i do believe in good parenting education. i hope i am not going to be a typical imposing chinese parent in the future. i would like to be a nurturer who implants logic to my kids. the most important lesson i'd like my children to learn? responsibility. they need to accept the consequences and bear the responsibility.

man, i've thought too far ahead.

i'm over it

2 years and some months, countless sleepless nights, along with some teary moments of reminiscence, i can jolly say that i'm quite over it. i've grown up. i know what my priorities for the next few years are. while i am still young, i should pursue the things that i can't pursue once i start having a family. my conviction is clear. i'm quite determined.

i've decided to let love go. it's painful. it's heart-wrenching. but boys and girls are seldom in the same frequency. i dwelve into my feelings and make a lot of assumptions toward how a theoretical relationship should work. a man's mind distracts him from the past, allowing him to move forward. 2 years change a man's dreams and perspectives especially if he is in his home country, where all the comfort and protection permeate him. a stubborn woman tends to continue focusing on her goals while trying to revive that relationship.

many girl pals told me how mature i am, how i can be subtle in all situations, and how determined i am in learning as much as i can. but i've learned since 2004 how love can totally poison me, plunge me into a black hole, which then blinds me from who i am as a person.

in short, i was always hopeful. the hope which turned into perseverance. perseverance that turned into expectations of how he should react. unfortunately, everything was crushed by disappointment. however, this disappointment tasted just like a bitter pill that gradually healed my sickness. i found my old self. i got back the 4 years that i lost and walked away with stride.

thanks, boy for showing me love.

thanks, mom for being my emotional fortress.

and thanks, pals, especially those of you who've known me for years. mel's back on her feet! :)

3. lose 5 lbs! target weight: 115 lbs

diana ross

fantastic concert despite the abrupt ending because the diva suddenly lost her voice. once, a guy dared himself to go up the stage to dance with her. the bodyguard immediately showed up from backstage, but he was told that it's fine by diana. no regrets in spending $87 for the concert!

i do hope she's going to get back her voice. she's 60 something years old, yet her voice still remains as crystal clear as 30 years ago.

bravo, ross!

starbucks madness

starbucks just launched a prepaid card called 'starbucks goldcard' in which we can top up $25 each time and enjoy the benefits of getting free wifi in store, 10% off for every drink, and first complimentary drink when you sign up for it.

there are 2 reasons why i want to go for this:

1. i tend to do my class projects in starbucks since i like to have a change of environment sometimes. i need the wifi.

2. i am so hooked up with the gingersnap latte! it's sweet on its own and the ginger blend is just right. might as well get a discount out of it because this item shall be removed when the holiday season is over.

i have to say that starbucks' campaign this time is quite a success. i finally got the goldcard after visiting 3 stores! i was quite confident the chain nearby my house would have the card considering it's a little bit further from lax. meanwhile, the incentives to own one are also quite attractive. kuddos to starbucks for starting a successful product line during these hard times!

i am heading to the bay area in 2 days. i will miss rosie considering she's normally my tour guide in san francisco. but i shall meet her in jakarta for a little reunion party. guess this vacation shall be reunion time since i'm making plans to meet up with my cedar, purdue, and la pals.

happy thanksgiving, everybody! :)

shopaholic

i was a tad relieved that i could extend next semester's payment plan to monthly plan for 5 months, allowing me to save and pay it out of pocket. however, as the holiday season is just around the corner and i will be going home, i've spent the last couple of days doing online shopping and visiting shops. my family is a plain jane that doesn't wear extravagant clothings. however, looking at my ordinary wardrobe, suddenly i felt the urge to feel more than normal. in fact, i would like to transform mom and sis to be a little more dressy. i decided to donate some t-shirts away and bought some nice tops for the three of us. we're still gonna be plain jane, but i've finally agreed that it's okay to dress up a little as long as i don't overdo it.

i've spent about $320 for the clothes and i still have nothing for the males in my family. it's quite difficult to figure out what looks good for men! i was about to give away my ipod to lil brother, but he's been given everything he ever wants in life, so i was still contemplating about giving it to him. maybe, i'll just bring some specialty food home. save all the trouble.

i'm indeed going to diana ross' concert! in fact, i'm also going to padi's concert. (an indonesian rock band) more consumption toward the end of the year. i think after the school's payment plan worked out, i completely forgot about saving. this shall be it. i can't afford to spend more money.

on the brighter side, obama will be our 44th president! this election really opened my eyes and urged me to follow my own country's political issues. added with the translation job that i did for the may 98 incident, i have a completely new level of appreciation for my own country. we've survived so many turmoils, occupations after occupations, corrupted government to a justice-pursuing cabinet. may 2009 be a good election year for indonesia. mel in united states will definitely cast the absentee vote. my vote does count to the future of my country.

i'm definitely excited to be home in a month. :)

diana ross concert

was reading purdue alumni mailing list and found out that diana ross is going to be in the orange county area on dec 7th! ticket's $86.50. a little expensive, but i adore her songs! ain't no mountains high enough...i will survive! and that very first song of hers that i heard back in secondary 2: if we hold on together. the following week after the concert will be my final week, but i think i will attend it.

one cool thing about la is that it is the center of entertainment since hollywood is just around the corner. felt privileged that i could attend a movie premier, met queen latifah and the kid from 90210, and probably attend this diana ross concert. am still looking forward to u2's concert. one thing that still puzzles me though: why do people out here still crib a lot about the weather? it never snows. it does get cold in the morning during fall...practically never rains, unlike london. hmmm...we need to start appreciating how fortunate we are living in la.

web cam

i got the privilege to install some programs to a friend's new laptop and it was quite a pain! wondering why? because i never paid attention to the instructions! when it came down to installing the driver of the web cam, i immediately plugged in the web cam as well as the installation cd. didn't read the manual and crossed my fingers that vista wouldn't mess up the installation process. didn't work! i blamed vista, looked online for a driver that's compatible to vista. again, the driver that i downloaded didn't work again! later that evening, i decided to rummage through my software bag and found the web cam manual. it was stated clearly that while inserting the installation cd, i SHOULDN'T plug in the web cam at all! argh!!! the installation did work, but when i tried to test the web cam, the laptop just kept giving error message. numerous attempts later, still no luck. this time, i am quite certain that the web cam software is indeed incompatible with window vista.

takeaway message? i DO need to read instructions more carefully. i have the tendency to believe that i am doing the right thing just because i've done it a zillion times. cockiness equals to disaster.

i also realized that i've been building up a muffin top. the pounch that's totally uncalled for has to be reduced! i need motivation to get regular exercise. my stamina has been deteriorating over the years and i think my face has become rounder and rounder. what will i become when i become a full-time employee?

meanwhile, my personality test result is out and i have changed a tiny weeny bit over the period of 4 years. instead of relying more on my feelings, i am doing a bit more of thinking. still an extrovert. still a sensing and perceiving person, but i guess i've become quite a procrastinator too.

what a balance, eh?

it's just a little crush :)

i am watching ina garten's barefoot contessa now. oh boy! the friend that she invited for a quick chicken pot pie lunch is so gorgeous! it's been a while since i last saw a good-looking man (not since pierce brosnan on the previous 007 movie) and this one is definitely an A list. kakaka. if that guy is right in front of me, i'll be blushing like a little girl.

anyway, am still contemplating whether i should do the 5k walk/run for breast cancer cause along with purdue alumni people. i think i'd sign up for that. i haven't exercised for a longggg time and this will be a good nudge. besides, my dream is to go for the la marathon in march next year or 2 years from now and this short-distance run will help me build my stamina.

song dedication

one fine day last week, i was wondering whether my song dedication would be read on air through a very popular radio station in los angeles. decided to send a dedication through the station's website. apparently, there were some technical problems with the website, so an error message was sent back to me. determined to resend the dedication, i retyped the same exact message through the same means. again, another error message popped up. still very very determined, i decided to just email my dedication and it did work.

2 hours later, i had 3 confirmation emails, saying that the 3 dedications had been received and they were being reviewed. i mistook the time stated on the email as the time in which my message would be broadcasted on air. guess what? the time was 02:30 A.M.! i was super excited, stayed up all night until 02:30 A.M...my song wasn't on air. 15 minutes later, half-asleep and completely given up, i decided to head off to bed.

2 days later, i received a confirmation that the first dedication would be broadcasted between the time frame of 7 and 9 P.M. that saturday. but here's the bad news: i was attending a broadway show during this air time! knowing that i had sent the same exact message thrice and assuming that they wouldn't be broadcasted anyway, i resent another dedication for another friend through the website. it did work this time.

the weekend passed and tuesday arrived. i found out that both dedications from last week and the recent one had been approved to be broadcasted on the same day during the same time slot! (thank goodness, i didn't have class while they were aired) it was really cool to have 2 song dedications read out within 1 hour. unfortunately, the talk show lady thought i was a man while reading out my 2nd dedication since i sent it to a girl pal. but well, i had to say that i was content when she was reading every single exact line that i typed for the dedications.

i know song dedications are past their time. boy, i was happy that my 'experiment' succeeded. at the same time, i think it's nice for you to show affection toward your loved ones on air. it really stirs your emotions. :)

financial crisis

i finally got the feel of stepping into adulthood. i am totally broke and i feel like running away. i am a little short for this month's rent and shopping for the new car insurance doesn't help either. the auto insurance rates in california are four times as much as indiana's! bb's going to be let go by the end of this month because i can't live in fear anymore. it's been acting up a couple of times, even stopping in the middle of freeway. besides, its gas-guzzling nature really puts me on the edge of poverty. found a new vehicle, nissan sentra, a much smaller car, with much better gas mileage and good leasing agreements. hope that the new bb (yes, it's another black stallion) will treat me well for the next 2 years.

when a financial crisis happened 5 years ago, it would be easy for me to just dial home and request for some extra allowance. but i've been working for the past 1 year, am pretty proud of myself for paying the rent, gas, and even last year's india trip. but i think the golden days have passed. i've made a lot of crucial decisions this year which impact on how i spent my money. it was a heart-wrenching decision, but home is still the place that welcomes me whenever i'm in need.

welcome to the real world, mel! where your credit scores may not be as high as a year back, where you keep on worrying on how to earn more money and make up for the losses, where your job may steal all your quality time and you wish you can get back to school. (glad that i still have 1 more year to go) but i have to face it. now, i finally understand why my roommies are so thrifty.

lost puppy

my neighbor downstair just lost her puppy. i remember seeing the dog a couple of days before she went missing. she was actually set free in front of the owner's gated apartment unit. am still at disbelief that it was the last time i saw her.

anyway, am down with severe sore throat this morn. decided to call off work. spent the morning cooking some soup and watching some sitcoms. took a long afternoon nap and finally gained back some stamina! glad that i will be able to make it to the south america meeting this evening. we're so close to the finish line. let's hope my teammates are focused on the meeting, so that we can get out as soon as possible.

can't hardly wait till my graduation. i want to be done with school work. i know that it's a completely different world out there. but working allows you to have your own set of priorities when you get off work. i would like to volunteer as a tutor to little kiddos. i do want to travel and enjoy the smell of freedom by going to unique places during the weekends. but if my future boss is demanding, i might end up like my roommie, who's constantly in front of computer, doing her tasks, even during the weekends. gasp. the vicious cycle shall continue.

big, bad habit

just finished my final today. boy, i'm not much of a fan of multiple choice questions. i always seem to question myself whether i pick the right answers when i step out of the exam room. i mean...there's a clear cut whether you understand the materials or not if your exam is in essay form. with 'all of the above', 'none of the above' as options of multiple choice questions and 0 credit for wrong answers (though your concepts are alright), i think i deserve some pat on the back for being anxious.

and all my fingernails have been chewed and bitten off! they look short and ungroomed. argh!!! this 18 year old habit is really hard to knock off! i've tried nail polish or just fiddling around with my fingernails without biting em...but when a challenging task is given or during the exam period, i can't help it! i simply need to bite my nails to keep myself calm. the after effect? since i bite em all the way close to the core of the skin, it's actually quite painful to open a jar and scratching is nearly impossible. (ah...i noticed that this paragraph is a tad too uncivilized to be published. but, whatever)

the good news is that there won't be any exams in the next 2 months. i can definitely let these nails grow pretty long. i'm going to try to be more self-conscious too. i haven't looked at my surroundings while biting my nails. be it driving, working, or reading, it's so difficult not to do it!

it's time for a change. old bad habit must die, or it will be engrained in my brain forever.
